HALO Shotgun Sight for Beretta 1301 Tactical

HALO Shotgun Sight for Beretta 1301 Tactical

$69.99

COMPETITION AND HUNTING

Although the HALO system was designed for tight patterning police, military, and home defense shotguns, it is easily adapted to competition and hunting.

Focusing on the front sight increases with difficulty as the target moves.

The HALO's intuitive target focus sight picture is better for tracking and shooting unpredictable moving targets.

Because focus remains on point of aim through the front sight, you can align the sights as you aggressively track the movements of the target.

The HALO sighting system has made harvesting multiple turkeys and pheasants easier, and turned my defensive shotgun into my preferred hunting firearm (1301 Tactical, 18.5'' barrel, fitted with extra full choke, and required magazine tube plug).

CALCULATED ANGULAR SIZE AND SHOT PATTERN TABLE

FIT

Our current model only fits the Beretta 1301 Tactical Shotgun.

The sight works with all 1301 Tactical shotguns; It is not compatible with the A300.

Design for use with the factory adjustable rear sight.

Patented & Patent pending, made in USA.

1301 TACTICAL INSTALLATIOIN

RECOMMENDED TOOLS:

T10 torx bit
5/16 wrench
Inch pound torque driver

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

Please carefully inspect your sight before you install it. We do not accept returns for sights that have been installed or altered.

DANGER: Before performing any installation, maintenance, adjustment, or inspection, ensure the firearm is UNLOADED. Remove all ammunition from the firearm and the immediate work area. Open the action and
visually and physically verify that the chamber and magazine are empty. Failure to verify that the firearm is unloaded may result in an unintentional discharge, causing serious bodily injury or death.

To install, remove the factory front sight post and protective wings by unscrewing the nut securing them to the top of the front sight base (5.5mm wrench).
Place the HALO sight on top of the front sight base with the holes aligned. Place the supplied lock nut on the foundation of the sight base with the nylon side down.
Align the lock nut with the holes of the HALO sight and front sight base.
Drop the supplied screw through the holes of the sight and base into the lock nut.
Put pressure on the side of the lock nut with your index finger as you gently hand tighten the screw using a T10 torx bit (sold separately). Be careful not to cross thread the lock nut.
As you hand tighten the screw the lock nut will lift off of the sight base’s foundation after several turns.
Attach the T10 bit to a torque driver and hold the nut in place with a 5/16 wrench, tighten to the recommended 15-inch pounds.

SUPPORTING RESEARCH

FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE:
The research indicates that the physiological changes induced from the release of stress hormones associated with the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) will cause an involuntary sight picture. Under survival stress, you will involuntarily focus on the threat and lose the ability to clearly focus on your front sight or anything closer than three feet.

"The SNS is activated any time the brain perceives a threat to survival, resulting in an immediate discharge of stress hormones. This mass discharge is designed to prepare the body for what has been recognized as the fight or flight response. Activation of the SNS is automatic and virtually uncontrollable. Once initiated, the SNS will dominate all voluntary and involuntary systems until the perceived threat has been eliminated" (Siddle, 1998).

"The body does in fact have instinctive responses which appear to be preprogrammed into our neural networks" (Siddle, 1998).

"Research shows that a SNS activation causes the pupils to dilate, a decrease in blood flow to the periphery of the retina and the inability to use the dominant eye. The result is the loss of near vision and the ability to focus on the front sight, focusing on the threat and the collapse of the peripheral vision" (Siddle, 1998).

"SNS excitement triggers pupil dilation and the contour of the lens to flatten, resulting in the loss of near vision. Therefore, the ability to focus on the front sight is not possible when the SNS is activated" (Siddle, 1998).

"SNS excitement also triggers the brain to tune into the system that can provide the most relevant information at that given second. In combat this will result in the visual field becoming the dominant source of information about the threat. This helps explain why officers state they could only focus on the threat and not the sights" (Siddle, 1998).

The loss of near-sighted focus and involuntarily focusing on the threat occurs at "175 beats per minutes (hormone induced heart rate from SNS activation)" (Grossman, 2007).

"A deadly force threat will drive the heart rate well above 200 beats per minute" (Siddle, 1998).

The 2011 NYPD Annual Firearms Discharge Report, documented a "19% hit rate. That means 8 of 10 shots fired at suspects, missed and went somewhere else. 56% of the officers reported firing without using their sights" (New York Police Dept., 2012). This is consistent with the earlier findings of Burroughs:

"93% of officers focused on the threat, not the weapon" (Burroughs, 1997).

Traditional iron sights designed for front sight focus do not accommodate the involuntary blurred near vision triggered during a SNS activation.

It is important to note that the survival stress threshold is not universal; the perception of control in any given situation is an individual process impacted by training, experience, and other factors. Not all will experience a SNS activation from similar scenarios. Many have defeated their opponents during threatening engagements without experiencing a SNS activation.

"When officers have adequate time, distance and cover the sympathetic nervous system is not activated to maximum levels" (Breedlove, 1995).

Under these conditions, use of the physical skills (focus, fine motor skills) required to properly perform the traditional shooting fundamentals with front sight focus are accessible and preferable. However, your perception of situational control can fluctuate and unexpectedly deteriorate during a fight for your life. No amount of training or discipline can permanently overcome or master the SNS.

"Activation of the SNS is automatic and virtually uncontrollable. Once initiated, the SNS will dominate all voluntary and involuntary systems until the perceived threat has been eliminated" (Siddle,1998).

The sympathetic nervous system has catastrophic effects on vision, fine motor skills, and the cognitive process. When you perceive that your life is in jeopardy, your SNS is automatically activated. As long as the SNS is active, you will not be able to focus on the front sight.

"Unfortunately, the firearms community has failed to adequately research the physiological responses to survival stress and design training programs (or iron sights) around these reactions" (Breedlove, 1995).

When firing under the control of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) you can choose to focus on the target or the front sight.

When firing during a SNS activation you can only focus on the target.

During a lethal encounter, the fact that you may not be able to see the front sight as practiced on the range, can lead to uncertainty and create an unnerving negative spiral.

Struggling to obtain a sight picture that you cannot physically see wastes valuable time, it slows sight alignment, reduces accuracy and may cause you to abandon the sighting system.

"During a SNS response the eye cannot focus, thus the shooter will see the front sight out of focus which will result in a heightened state of stress" (Breedlove, 1995).

If you plan on using a firearm to defend your life, choosing a sighting system that functions effectively with the deteriorating effects of the SNS increases your chance of survival.

Front sight focus is not compatible with SNS shooting.

"It is a great disservice to instruct students (recruits) in the potentially dangerous practice of front sight firing (for SNS engagements). Survival is dependent on the visual system responding as efficiently as possible to each scenario" (Breedlove, 1995).

"A good combative sight needs to interrupt the shooter's field of vision. If he has to go looking for it, it probably won't happen. A precise sight picture, in which the front sight is sharp with the rear sight fuzzy and the target fuzzy, will not happen. This sight picture is great on a stationary range where the target is not moving and no one is shooting back at you, but when the shooter is trying to find a moving target, move from target to target or track a threat that is trying to shoot him, the best that can be achieved is the insertion of a contrasting image into the eye target line" (Spaulding, 2010).

At a minimum, the sighting system must be made so that the front sight easily intersects the shooter's field of vision.

"Understanding the implications of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in combat is fundamental to selecting a combat firearms system" (Siddle,1998).

"Many of the returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans talk about placing the red dot of their reflex sight on an insurgent and pressing the trigger. Since these dot optics do not require the shifting of the eyes from the target to the sights and back again, this place and press sight system works very well even in the most frantic of environments. This brings an end to the debates on how we should train for close quarters gunfights." (Spaulding, 2010).

The HALO sight adopts the red dot optics' place and press system. Simply superimpose the HALO around the point of aim and press the trigger.

The bright green polymer ring effortlessly intersects your line of sight to the target and instinctively surrounds your point of aim as you remain focused on the target.

The HALO sight gives you the advantage of an accurate sighting system that is compatible with sympathetic nervous system firing. It works with your instincts, not against them. It combines the Fight or Flight response's involuntary threat focus and blurred near vision with your natural abilities to center objects in a circle and align concentric shapes.

COUNTERINTUITIVE AIMING:
Focusing on the front sight is counterintuitive. When using standard iron sights with front sight focus, to hit the target, you must not focus on it. As you acquire your sight picture, you look at the target initially, then shift your focus to the front sight.

"There are few things about shooting that are counterintuitive, like focusing on the front sight" (Lohman, 2018).

"We have three choices of where to focus once the sight picture is established: the rear sight, the front sight, or the target. It's only natural to want to focus on the target" (Flanigan, 2018).

"Many shooters naturally tend to apply a sharp focus on the target or a specific area within the target. This is natural since this is where we envision where we want the projectile to land" (Scott, 2015).

Shooters must learn to trust front sight focus, even though doing so works against their instincts.

"Maintaining a consistent front sight focus is difficult to master…Beginners tend to focus on the target instead of the front sight…it takes a lot of time and practice (dry-fire and live-fire) to trust the front sight" (Scott, 2015).

"Just focusing on the front sight seems unnatural…Some are distracted by the bad guy's movement, gun or aggressive facial expression. They are accustomed to looking directly at the target" (Findley, 2017).

"At close ranges there is a natural tendency to look at the target" (United States Marine Corp., 2010).

It is normal to focus on the target we want to hit.

"Focus your attention on the part of the object you wish to hit and you will be surprised to find out how much truth there is in the saying, you hit where you look, in the same manner as when throwing a stone or a ball" (Fairbairn, 1927).

It is easier to stay focused on the point of aim through the HALO sight and fire, then to force yourself to shift focus away from the target, to the front sight and press the trigger.

The HALO's intuitive sight picture takes advantage of your inherent want to focus on the target you are trying to hit.

NATURAL ABILITY TO CENTER OBJECTS:
Your eyes have the natural ability to center objects.

"The natural ability of the eye to center objects in a circle and to seek the point of greatest light (center of the aperture) aid in providing correct sight alignment" (McCullough, 2010).

"The peep sight may improve your shooting accuracy by taking advantage of the natural tendency of your eye to find the center of a circle" (Olshan, 2017).

"Your eyes have the natural ability to find the center of anything" (Sajnog, 2015).

"The sense of location is a fundamental aspect of the perception of objects. We have a vivid perceptual and motor sense of the location of objects both in terms of their independent positions in visuo-motor space, and their positions relative to other objects. This is underscored by the superb natural ability to sense alignment, bisection and equidistance among objects" (Vishwanath, 2003).

The HALO's hollow structure takes advantage of your natural ability to center objects in a circle.

The HALO is intuitively aligned around the point of aim.

When focused on the target through the front sight, the point of aim is effortlessly and instinctively aligned in the geometric center of the HALO for consistent accurate fire.

The HALO sight combines your natural desire to focus on the spot you are trying to hit with the instinctive ability to center objects.

NATURAL ABILITY TO ALIGN CONCENTRIC CIRCLES:
Your eyes have the natural ability to align concentric circles and shapes.

"Aperture sights have been known since the time of the crossbow. The eye and brain have a natural ability to align concentric circles and aperture sights use this to their benefit. The eye automatically aligns the front sight in the center of the rear sight and on the target" (Flatnes, 2013).

"The sighting arrangement on the Walther LGR takes advantage of the natural ability of the eye and brain to easily align concentric circles" (Walther Arms Inc., 2020).

"The natural ability to align concentric circles is rooted in both human visual perception and the geometric regularity of concentric shapes, which are prevalent in nature and widely used in human-made systems."

When paired with an aperture rear sight the HALO's circular hollow structure takes advantage of your natural ability to align concentric shapes.

The point of aim is intuitively aligned at the center of both circles.

When focused on the point of aim, the HALO and rear sight effortlessly and instinctively align concentrically around the point of aim for consistent accurate fire.

The sighting system combines the shooter's natural desire to focus on the spot they are trying to hit with the instinctive abilities to center objects in a circle and align concentric shapes.

PRESBYOPIA:
Many people experience some loss of focusing power for near objects as they age. Presbyopia is a natural part of the aging process. It is a vision disorder associated with aging that results in a progressively worsening ability to focus clearly on close objects. As our eyes age, it becomes more difficult to see near objects clearly, even with corrective lenses. Anyone over the age of 35 is at risk for developing presbyopia. It usually becomes noticeable in your 40s and continues to worsen until around the age of 65.

Iron sights are typically within the range of near objects difficult for people with presbyopia to see.

Standard iron sights are designed for front sight focus. Presbyopia prevents older shooters from clearly focusing on the front sight.

The HALO sight eliminates the need to have clear focus on the front sight. The aperture's diameter is large enough to allow clear unobstructed focus of the point of aim. The wide spacing and thin walls of the oversized structure compensate for the blurred near vision associated with target focus.

With blurred near vision, focusing on the target through the HALO sight is more effective.

The sight system is compatible with presbyopia; it enables you to stay focused on the target and make accurate hits.
